During the past few years, teenagers have been suspended or worse for posting death threats or plans for murder on their web sites. The Algonquin Countryside posted a story about another such incident here. You could look at this as a superficial difference between diaries and blogs: blogs are not private and bloggers should be careful about what they post. Or you could look at this as an important sociological tool. People could use blogs in this way as a cry for help. If this boy had kept his anger to himself, he might have acted out on himself or others. Now that he’s been found out, hopefully something will be done about his problems. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t say anything about the community getting the boy help. [Link][comments?][Karma: 8 ( + / - )]
Sometimes travelers would prefer more guidebooks that are even more up-to-date than those updated once a year. Enter the travel blog. The online edition of the San Francisco Chronicle has a quick article by Arthur Frommer about such blogs. [Link][2 comments][Karma: 15 ( + / - )]
Time posted a short piece about video blogs, the latest addition to the blogsphere. People are hoping video blogs will lead to a great thing: news reporting that is truly in the hands of the public. Or maybe we'll all just get inundated with videos of teenagers hanging out in front of the Quickie Mart or in their basements. Well, that last one's pretty entertaining, actually. Salon ran Arianna Huffington's nice little ode on the blog today. (To see the story, you either have to be a paid Salon member or watch an ad, although I was able to read it without having to see the ad.) In it she praises the collaborative nature of blogging and how that collaboration, along with a little arguing (which can help to strengthen one's argument), enhances journalism. ...of information, that is. Microsoft started a blog called Channel 9 that aims to open up communication between Microsoft and outside developers. (Here's a News.Com story about it.) The name Channel 9 is a reference to the radio channel that broadcasts pilots' chatter to airplane passengers. Though this isn't open source per se, the use of the blog has a nice open source flavor to it. [Link][comments?][Karma: 9 ( + / - )]
No blues here, just a bad title. Yahoo! News reports on mobile blogs. Using their camera cellphones, people email all sorts of pictures to their moblogs. Soon, the story predicts, cellphones will have blogging capabilities built right in and people will be able to blog their pictures at the touch of a button. It kind of reminds me of the movie, Aliens, where every soldier had a camera attached to their head so that someone at base camp could remotely monitor the situtation. |
